CROSSFIRE: 1 Player, Joystick. You must defend a city's streets from attacking aliens. You patrol the block-like streets of a city surrounded by alien creatures. Your gun contains only 35 missiles (on the 1st round). As you play cat-and-mouse with the advanc- ing forces, you move into an intersect- ion and fire. If you hit an alien, it changes into another different creature worth more points (each creature must be hit 3 times before being destroyed). Occasionally, a bonus shape appears on one of the central streets. If you can reach it before firing 6 more shots, you can move over it and collect bonus points; after 6 shots, however, it disappears. When your ammunition runs low, a fuel depot (shown as a 'diamond' shape) appears somewhere in the city. Moving over this will replenish your ammunition. With nearly a dozen laser- armed creatures gunning for you, the fuel depot is not an easy spot to get to. After completing a level, you will have 5 fewer shots for the next level. A very challenging game, offering smooth, but non-colorful graphics. The joystick control works well (when you get used to it). You can remain still at an intersection, press the joystick button, and shoot by positioning the stick in the direction that you wish to fire. (The stick doesn't fire when it is centered.) If you can defeat all the aliens on level 1 (48 kills), then you advance to the next faster, and more deadly level. Bonus men are awarded when score reaches 5,000 and for every 5,000 points thereafter. There is little doubt that this is one of the best strategy shoot-'em-ups to come along in a long while. It's a game requiring considerable practice; it remains tough, and one that you will not tire of easily.
