LASER CHESS› From: COMPUTE! June, 1987› Requires XL/XE››The programme won First Prize in›COMPUTE!'s programming contest for›the Atari ST Disk & Magazine (back›when the item existed) and was ported›over to the Apple, Commodore and›Amiga.››The programme uses a basic call for›GR. 7+, and so demands an XL or XE›system.››The programme runs under›Atari Basic.››The game is similar to chess in that›pieces move, and moving your piece›onto an opponents captures it (but›apparently only the king and the›blocks... solid squares with one›reflective surface... can capture)...›but one can also shoot one's laser,›and if a piece is hit on a›non-reflective surface, it is›destroyed (the beam bounces from›reflective surfaces).››The goal is to eliminate the›opponent's KING› +› /|\› / | \› +--+--+› \ | /› \|/› +››The Hypercube will move NOT capture a›piece when moved onto it, but move it›to a random spot on the board (it is›invulnerable to laser shots... the›shot passes right through!).››A turn consists of two moves; select›a piece (joystick)... pieces can move›one or two squares (but two squares›is the TWO moves allowed!) and cannot›move diagonally. Or one can rotate›the piece (takes ONE move) to any›orientation.››The centre square of the grid absorbs›laser shots and any piece moved there›reappears at a random empty square.››Firing your laser takes one move (can›only be done once per turn).››Move the cursor (joystick) over the›desired piece... press the trigger›(keep pressing to rotate to the›desired position if to rotate, or›move the cursor to the destination›square and press the trigger again...›to fire the laser, move the cursor to›the laser, press the trigger to›select and then press "L" to›"lase").››There is much more information in the›issue of COMPUTE! (and it includes›the other versions, if you know›someone with another computer).›› ENJOY!›
